Tree sap on ceramic coating should be softened and lifted with the wash or product your installer named for that coating. Do not grind it off with a fingernail, a plastic card, or a dry towel. Sap is tacky. Grinding it is how you drag grit across the panel.

Paint Shield SD matches you with vetted, insured local installers. We do not apply or remove coatings.

Tree sap droplets on a glossy car roof parked under trees in San Diego

Why sap is its own page

Bird droppings are acidic mess that should come off promptly. Sap is sticky plant residue that can sit as dots on the roof, hood, and glass. The first move is still: read the care sheet, then soak.

Eucalyptus, pine, and street trees over San Diego driveways drop sap in warm months. A car that lives under a tree in Kensington or a covered carport in Carlsbad will not have the same load. The address does not pick the solvent. The product sheet does.

This site does not publish a sap remover, a dwell time, or a “safe” household oil. Those recipes are other people’s chemistry. Ask the installer which product is compatible with the coating that is actually on the car.

A careful first attempt

Rinse. Let water sit on the dots if the care sheet allows a soak. Use the approved wash media with light pressure. Rinse and dry. Inspect in raked light.

If the dots remain, stop. A second, different chemical is how people haze a coating. Book an inspection. How to inspect a ceramic coating job is useful if you are not sure what was installed.

Do not clay the car as a sap shortcut unless the installer says clay is appropriate on this coating. Clay is a decontamination step, not a cure-all. Clay bar before ceramic coating is about prep, not emergency sap removal on an already coated car.

Glass can take sap too. That is not a reason to use a paint coating kit on the windshield. See ceramic coating on a windshield if glass treatment is a separate question.

When correction enters the conversation

If the coating looks marked after the sap is gone, the pro may talk about cleaning, a maintenance topper listed on the sheet, or paint correction. Ask what they observed. Ask for a test area. Typical correction range is $300 to $1,200, installer confirms.

A ceramic maintenance program visit is typically $150 to $350 depending on scope, installer confirms. It is not a promise that sap will never return if you keep parking under the same tree.
