Faded paint should be inspected before anyone applies a ceramic coating. Older, oxidized, or peeling paint is a poor candidate. A coating will not restore chalked clear coat. It can make the fade look more even, or it can make the failure more obvious.
Paint Shield SD matches you with vetted, insured local installers. We do not apply the coating. The installer assesses the paint and quotes the safe next step.
Fade, oxidation, and peeling are not one condition
Dull, oxidized clear that still has thickness may respond to paint correction, which is machine polishing that can improve swirl marks, water spots, light scratches, and oxidation in the clear coat. Then a coating may belong on the corrected surface.
Chalking that wipes off white on a rag is a warning. There may not be enough clear coat left. Polishing that panel can burn through.
Peeling or sheets of finish lifting is not a coating job. See ceramic coating peeling vs clear coat. Recoating a flake is how the next flake starts.
Inland sun in El Cajon, Escondido, and Santee fades horizontal panels faster than a garage-kept coastal car. That is history for the inspection. It is not a measurement of remaining film build. This site does not publish a mil reading or a year when paint “should” fade.
Why a kit makes this worse
A DIY ceramic coating on faded paint locks in the dullness and can be ugly to remove. Skip the kit if the fender and the door no longer match in the sun.
Is ceramic coating worth it already says coating will not fix failing clear. This page is the faded-paint fork: correct, refinish, or leave it.
Gelcoat on a boat or RV is a different material. Use gelcoat oxidation before a marine coating for that surface.
What the quote should separate
Ask the pro to itemize inspection, correction, and coating. This site’s correction range is typically $300 to $1,200. Coating is $500 to $3,000. Both are installer-confirms after an in-person look. A combined number that hides “we cannot polish this fender” is not a useful quote.
If they recommend refinishing instead, that is bodywork, not a coating upsell. Believe the inspection.
Start with ceramic coating only after the paint is a candidate. Getting matched costs nothing. Call (760) 400-6557 or request a quote.
